Vehicle Shipping – Basics that define a Heavy Haul Load

Heavy Haul Vehicle Shipping – Easy or Difficult?

The answer is both…

It is easy to define if you need special auto transportation needs.   But, also technical in nature too.

  1.  Does the vehicle fit inside a flatbed or enclosed shipping container?  Usually the width is about 9 feet wide.  Also about 9 foot tall is the rule of thumb, as most states the maximum height is 13’6″”, but the bed is usually close to 5 feet tall.
  2. Weight is also an important factor, as the transport may be inside those requirements but outside the weight range.  The max additional load for a typical hauler is about 45,000 pounds.
  3. Odd Shapes are also to be considered.  For example a sailboat (see below) may have a mast that can come down, but, is still very long.  So, it would qualify for a heavy haul shipment, even though some of the other parameters may have been met.

Hope that helps, but, check with a professional vehicle transport company for their specifications!  Each company and driver have different rules.  Also, each State is different, so, if you are doing a multi-state transport there is even more to consider.  But, the pros know the rules and regulations of transporting vehicles.
